Genre: Action, Drama
Synopsis: Set in 1990s Tokyo, centers around the lives of Chinese immigrants in Japan
Well, the website didn’t provide a thorough synopsis so I think I’m going to babble a litte bit regarding the plot 🙂
The movie is about arrival of illegal Chinese immgrants in Japan by sinking ship. That time, illegal immigrants can hardly find any job so some of them have to work as underpaid labors and even in prostitution world. Jackie Chan decided to go to Japan in order to look for her sweetheart, played by Xu Jinglei, who already went to Japan ahead of him.
When he first arrived in Japan, he meets his friend from the same village (Daniel Wu). Through him he finds a shelter and temporary job. One day when he was working in a underground tunnel, Japanese police officers were chasing after them to ask them regarding their documents. When they all try to run away, the Japanese police officer falls to the drainage and the he can’t swim so Chan tries to save him and run away. The Japanese police wants to thank him but he’s already running away. Later on, in the movie when Chan is in trouble, the Japanese police helps him out.
He meets Fan Bingbing and through her he gets a job in a night club. One day, he happens to see one of Japanese yakuza members and he spots his sweetheart with him. It turns out that Xu already married to the yakuza guy. Throughout the movie, he becomes closer to Fan and starting to do illegal job. He realised Wu’s dream to be a chestnut seller (that’s what I got from the movie :-P). However, due to getting close to a Taiwanese gang boss’ daughter, Wu gets beaten up and from that day onwards Chan tells himself that he’s going to get a legal document (because he lost his) and make his fellow immigrants’ lives become better. He saves Xu’s husband life and helps him out to get better position in yakuza organisation by killing some of the leaders in exchange to legal documentation and getting the area possessed by Taiwanese gang.
Later on, after getting better life, all his fellow friends start to lose control and sell drugs to youngsters (Wu’s idea, it seems like after losing his hand, he becomes really depressed and he tries to harden himself up by being a gangster). The Japanese officer comes back and try to confront Chan regarding the chaos made by his fellow immigrants yet he has no idea about it. When he finds out about it, at the same time, another yakuza member is trying to kill Xu’s husband. Yeah, expect all the action over here. During the fight, Xu’s husband is killed and before his death, he hands over all the data from yakuza organisation to Chan. In his attempt to save Xu and her daughter, he was shot. The Japanese officer tries to chase him and finds him in the underground tunnel where they first met. Chan is already dying and handing the data to the officer and get carried away. End of the story.
The movie is supported by several famous actors, and honestly, my date thought the movie is screwed up lol. The plot is slightly boring and the movie is pretty serious. It’s actually more like a drama rather than action. The action part is just a minor compared to the predominant drama. Not being a drama addict, I personally find the movie is way too boring! If it wasn’t because of the freezing air con, I probably would already fall asleep :-P. Besides, I prefer Jackie Chan’d comedies rather than this kind of serious movie.
The acting was good. Hey that is expected but too bad the plot wasn’t that interesting. Anyway, if anyone watched Princess Pearl (some very old Chinese series), you might recognize Fan Bingbing right away :-D. As for Xu Jinglei, she somewhat reminds me of Xteener lol.
My rating: 2.5/5
